I agree that's the best method or look online at the end of the day after playing if possible as in the case of MGM casinos.
While not accurate for all casinos, a very very common practice is for win/loss calculation to start the moment points start accumulating. For example at Coast Casinos,last I knew, if they mail you $100 free play which you download and play through once and have $80 in credits remaining thereafter points will start to accumulate. If you continue to play for an hour until the credit meter goes to zero your loss for the day will register as $80.
