That is why they talk about getting a good machine?!

I agree, when it comes to these machines they are still slots and your results will be really random and all over the place. I figure that the skill factor would work in your favor as a tie breaker, and not much else.

Don't discount the variance factor for these machines ...
A few weeks ago I played in a "winner takes all" elimination format tournament on these machines, with a total of three rounds.
In the first round I had the highest score among the 43 attendees (high value tournament). In fact, my score was 20% higher than the competitor with 2nd highest score..
I approached the second round with a certain amount of confident swagger and was promptly put in my place as I received the 2nd lowest session score. Every balloon hit was a 1000 or 2000 pt dud (out of 5000). And I rarely connected with significant hits on any of the spins.
"Sensory overload" shouldn't be much of a factor once you're familiar with these machines (unless you've just polished off your third drink in the last hour ;)

You might have missed some stuff. Some of the tournaments don't have rules about helpers, helpers can be useful for the stuff you might be missing. Sensory overload is definitely part of the tournament.
