A more important point would be, if Wizard was consulted for the story, how is it that he did not set the record straight here? Such a statement from him, a true expert, would have done wonders for all the speculation we're seeing

I doubt that Shack ever saw the story before it was printed. The reporter likely called him up, asked him a few questions, and then wrote the story. Assuming Shack was quoted accurately --- with all the nuances he likely included in his answer --- is an assumption I wouldn't make. (Nor can I state categorically that he was misquoted. I wasn't there for the interview.) My own experience is when reporters make notes on video poker answers including numbers, what gets printed is often very different than what was said.

Shack may not have previously read the New York Times article that implied the $1 billion was accumulated W2Gs rather than coin-in. And the UT-San Diego reporter was likely not aware of the significance of the difference between the two numbers.

The moral of the story is that $1 billion isn't always the same as $1 billion.
