Getting a good price on a rental car the last few years has been a great source of frustration for me. Costco is a great resource but the only way to insure the best price is check back frequently-book-cancel-rebook as the price goes down. The rate swings are as crazy as air fares from hour to hour. It might seem like a waste of time but I frequently get a rate 50% cheaper than my original reservation. Patience and timing. Never prepay! Amex gold cards have a 100%(no hassle) collision coverage insurance option for $24.95 per rental. My own auto policy takes care of liability.
