I asked about this at the desk at Sam's Town earlier this month. My Emerald card has an expiration date of 10/31/12 and I am somewhat short of the required 250,000 at present. As an out-of-towner, my card has definitely been issued on 'a good for 12 months' basis, but I wasn't clear on what the earning period was and when points roll off.
I was told that with an expiration date of 10/31, the period that would be considered to see if I had the 250,000 points was from 11/1 off the prior year through 10/31. I believe this is true.
The problem I have is that the tier card score shown at the B-Connected website is for the last 12 (rolling) months. At the beginning of each month, the oldest month's total drops off. So the number shown there does not help me determine how many more points I need by 10/31 unless I know how many points will drop off between now and then. I don't know exactly how many points I earned in Sept and Oct 2011 that will not be there. The rep at Sams Town could tell me how much I had earned those months at Sams Town but could not see information from other Boyd Casinos, such as Main Street, where I had a lot of play.
I do keep spreadsheet showing coin-in per day per casino, so I can probably closely estimate the points that will roll off.
The other thing I was told was that each dollar in on slots earns 2 points for tier purposes rather than the 1 point earned for video poker. I had not been aware of this.
