I want to improve my skills but not sure of the most appropriate way to start. When I walk into a casino and see the rows of vp machines, it gets overwhelming and I am never to clear on what machines are worth playing and if I am making the best decisions during my play.

It would be ideal if you know a smart gambler who can show you around the casino and explain the mysteries of video poker.
Otherwise, I recommend Bob Dancer's book "Video Poker for the Intelligent Beginner" and the companion software "Video Poker for Winners". They can be purchased at bobdancer.com and other sites.
As someone else here recommended, find out what game you're going to be playing at your casino(s) and learn and practice that one. 9/6 JoB is a good basic game and the strategy can be used for a lot of other games with small adjustments, such as 8/5 BP.
Here's a list of what you will lose by playing the wrong strategy. Note that playing 8/5 BP using the strategy for 9/6 JoB is still 99.16%. http://www.videopokerhelp.net/wrong_strat.html
