If I were just starting out I'd stick with Tuscany out of that group and I wouldn't go near El Cortez, Terribles, Sam's Town, or esp. Ellis Island. The gross-out factor weighs far greater with me than whatever a property offers for vp.
Don't get the wrong impression on your initial trip: visit the M, South Point, Rampart, or even the Orleans or any of the beautiful hotels on and around the Strip.

I would get a free room at Imperial Palace before going to Terrible's or Tuscany. Their parking garage is very close to rooms and casino and a short distance to the strip, right in the center of the strip. Also if you rent a car (Usually we get Payless for around $11 per day) you can go to the M, South Point, Silverton, the Orleans, Sun Coast, pick up freebies plus usually some free play when you get their card. This way you can find out what & where you like.
