I'm looking at Bob Bartop for a good answer to this one.
In a regular bar (i.e., outside of Vegas and paying for drinks), if I am
paying the bartender in cash, I toss down a buck or two after getting my
drinks, then I walk away from the bar. When I am sitting at the bar, I will
have a tab open, and settle up at the end of my time there, and tip at that
point.
In Vegas at a machine, I toss a buck or two at the cocktail waitress when
the drink arrives.
In Vegas at a bartop, I receive a drink for free, and a little cup is placed
in front of me with a torn receipt inside. Assuming I would like to tip a
buck or two a drink (depending on service and what I'm ordering), where do I
tip and what is the appropriate time? I ask because I have tended to put
down a dollar bill on the bar just like I would at a normal bar, and
sometimes it has seemed like the bartenders have just left it on the bar for
some time, occasionally even getting me a second round before collecting
their tips.
Without getting into the issue of tipping bartenders on jackpots and how
that relates to handpay tips, what is an appropriate way to tip in order to
keep the liquor flowing and the bartender happy?
