I'm using Ubuntu also, and love it. I used to dual boot with Windows, but now I just keep Windows on one computer only, just in case I absolutely need it, the rest is Ubuntu. In fact, I am currently typing this on Linux Mint, which is Ubuntu-based. Check out Mint, you may like it better.
Anyway, it has nothing to do with rss. I don't understand why it would be a "pain" to manually download your show, but I do find rss handy for a few other links. For instance, I use LVReview Journal's feed, and keep up on all the casino news. I also use Jean Scott's rss feed. It's handy. And like you, Frank, a year ago I didn't even know what it was. I'm learning. There's a lot of cool stuff out there.
