I've been on junkets when I've received far better treatment than my buddies when we've played the same table games for roughly the same length of time at roughly the same level. Indeed, most of my buddies love the middle of the table in craps, which is what the casino wants. I do not. I am more frequently treated to offers of dinner, room upgrades, etc. from the pit boss than my buddies whose betting patterns give a far higher theo to the casino than mine.
As for Harrahs/Caesars, I am also convinced that there is a code for "wasn't an a$$" and/or "took care of the boys" for your credit-earning rate, at least on the craps table. I am often astounded at the number of credits I receive for playing pass/come line with max odds exclusively -- worth very little to the casino over time. And to me it makes sense for the casino to do that, at least with craps players. Craps is a "group" game that attracts players based on the "vibe" at the table moreso than any other game in the casino. Nothing kills a craps table like jagoffs slinging/calling bets at the last second, blaming shooters for their roll outcomes, changing betting patterns suddenly, etc.

The above was for live poker. For vp with reference to another topic "HEAT"
someone had mentioned getting heat at Harrahs Lake Tahoe. About 10 yrs
ago, I hit a very large jackpot at Harveys & tipped 2.5%. (Have to admit that
I was still kind of wet behind the ears then.) I haven't come close to
another jackpot like that. But all the employees involved have moved up but
still remember me even though they're in positions where they can't receive
tips any more. Long story short, never received any heat even when playing
the $5 cherry pie & other slots. This isn't to say that what I did was what
you should do but I felt good about it as did my wife who was with me &
approved of what I did. I'm sure that good arguments can be made for the case
against but the bottom line is that we felt good about it at the time, did
not expect the ongoing benefits that have lasted to this day & we have no
regrets even now.
I do want to emphasize that all the viewpoints in this "Tips" discussion
have validity from whatever position you're coming from. I'm a firm believer
in the adage "You get what you pay for" which is probably influenced by my
desire to find the good side of a situation. I have to admit that I did not
always have this attitude but, strangely, developed it after starting to
gamble on a frequent basis & needed help to get through those long 7-sigma
losing streaks :) Later, I was able to apply the lessons learned from
gambling as analogies to life & that helped in getting through the 2007 - 2008
crash.
PS on another subject, Frank had mentioned listening to "Stochasticity"
from Radiolab (6/15/2009). I listen to podcasts & books while playing VP & it
helps to pass the time. Radiolab (NPR) is my favorite among the podcasts.
There are over 100 hrs of podcasts. & you don't have to tip or pay for it,
it's all free!!! However, they could use some help so try to find a few
bucks for them if you can spare it.

Of course in a legitimate game you would not "get better cards" by tipping
the dealer. If you play regularly somewhere however (or even if you just
plan on spending a day or several days playing in a poker room) - you may
find that the dealers can help you:
a) get a seat at the table and game that you want
b) get the seat that you want at that table
c) get you food service promptly
d) help you with special rules that might exist at that club
e) make sure that you have as much time as you need to make your play
f) make things easier all around
Also, your nontipping reputation can spread to floormen and others who can
make things easier or not as easy for you as well.
They work hard for their money, and it's a job based on tips.
