In fact the top Beyer figure horse is almost always the favorite. I
bought Beyer's first book when it came out. Those were the days. I made my own
Beyer figures for New York and all the tracks that shipped in. I lived
like a monk for a couple of years but had a very successful run,
Now one of the ways you can make money is pickling winners in races where
the beyers aren't as predictive.
Turf Sprints and turf races in general. Races with unusual pace
scenario's etc. The game is constantly changing, and you have to change with it.
What worked thirty years loses money today.

When Beyer speed figures were first published in The Racing Times, around
1990 if I recall, one could do quite well with that information if you were
familiar with how figures work. Within a year or two, Daily Racing Form
bought out their competition, and nowadays these figures are incorporated in
the Racing Form, where everyone and their brother can see them and use
them. The high-figure horse in 1990 that went off at 3 to 1, would today go
off at 6-5.
It's not just enough to have a good methodology, you've got to have one
that is not popular.
