In the past few months, I was under the impression that the gaming industry here in LV was getting marginally better than it has been in the last couple of years. Might not be the case. I found out that this week that Sam's Town had laid off six of their change people, or team members, or ambassadors or whatever the hell euphemism they are using to make you think they actually give a damn about their employees. I know three of these folks and some of you may as well. Hard to miss big Max as he is a towering large man, and as nice as they come. Baby face Brian, who usually worked up on the second floor, is also as friendly and as personable a worker you are likely to meet in a casino. Brian had 17 years with the company and Max had 18 years of service. From discussions with the infamous unnamed sources, it appears that these layoffs had already been ongoing at other properties under the Boyd umbrella ( pun intended ). From what I could gather, it seems that once a layoff occurred at one of the other properties, the unlucky recipient of the pink slip had preferential treatment if they wanted to apply for a part time position at another Boyd location. I'm getting a whiff of eau de Union here and maybe even a stench of benefit removal for Boyd. I'm just guessing. The real topper is that, let's say Orleans and Gold Coast lays people off and some of them decide to apply and are accepted at Sam's Town as part time employees, and then down the road Sam's decides to make some layoffs, if the newly acquired part timers have more tenure with the company, they dodge the layoff bullet. Interesting domino effect, isn't it. This is just the latest in a string of things that have happened with this multi-hundred dollar conglomerate that have irked me. When I get time and figure out how I would like to state them, I will try to post more Boyd Bits of Brilliance. Maybe now they can afford to put in one of them there fancy cement ponds in the back yard of Echelon Place when they resume construction 10 years down the road.
