Re: [vpFREE] Anyone taking health precautions when playing?

A little back of the envelope math working out different possible infection and mortality rates for the US alone should put a knot in your gut.  We don't know nearly enough about this little bug to know what is going to happen in the population as it spreads.  For myself, I would prefer not to get it.  I don't do particularly well with respiratory illness and don't feel like rolling the dice for those stakes.  There are other reasons to do one's best to avoid being infected.  One is that you don't infect others more vulnerable than you and put them at risk... loved ones, friends, or perfect strangers.  This thing seems to move person to person pretty readily.  Another reason is that you don't stress a medical system unnecessarily.  It's easy to envision a scenario where care providers, facilities and equipment are overwhelmed.  The slower this thing progresses in the population the less stress to finite resources and more time to learn about this new bug.

The casino this weekend seemed to be little concerned with corona viruses.  Pretty busy.  A little talk, but no masks or gloves.  It's in the midwest and there aren't a lot of known infections yet.  No institutional precautions were visible in the players lounge buffet, steakhouse or bars.  Yet.  Last call at 2 AM did seem to thin the crowd out. I discovered it is incredibly difficult not to touch my face.  I settled for not touching my face with my hands.  And wiping down a machine is fine when you are going to settle in and grind, but a lot of my life in a casino these days is moving from one slot or vp machine to another looking for an advantage.  I did a lot of washing hands or using hand sanitizer and wiping down my phone.

Frankly, I'm less than pleased that there's a suggestion that there has been panic or hype to any extent.

Anyone who doesn't have at least modest heightened concern vs that assigned to a typical flu season clearly is out of touch with the established facts (even if they involve some degree of uncertainty).  But "heightened concern" doesn't translate to "panic" or "hype".  (And, to the extent that may reasonably characterize those in some quarters, I don't find it difficult at all to ignore them ... fools do what fools do).

What we do know is that if you catch CV, the mortality rate you're facing is higher than a typical flu.  For someone who's relatively healthy (and young), the difference could be relatively modest .... yet significant, based upon reports to date.  Speaking as a 60-yr old man who's dealt with a couple of severe bouts of pneumonia in my lifetime, I'm definitely looking to err on the side of caution this year.

As far as this thread, which I initiated, the purpose was specifically to sound out what might be reasonable precautions vs those which are clearly excessive.  To the extent that there's been constructive discussion, I find it quite valuable and I hope members continue to chime in.

Don't listen to the propaganda.  Flu kills more people because there are many more cases!!! The death rate for Corona is like 5 x greater than the flu.The people are hyping themselves because they don't trust Trump!

if you have or want to have a flight on SWA between now and june 3, be sure to check the rates. they just took a drop yesterday that saved my wife 50%.. since SWA allows you to keep a credit if you cancel, now's a good time to book or re-book

There is a huge convention in AC this coming week. It has been decided to hold it even though the discussion was held. People have to realize the news is hyping people up.  Practice safe hygiene and remember the flu has infected more, and more people die  from the flu than this corona virus.  A vaccine is in the way. ( according to reports Israel is testing one now and possibly will be available shortly)  Be careful and diligent and we will get through this. Stop panicking.

Geez I thought you had already moved to Ma.  and I'd run into you at Foxwoods !

Anyway  for decades I have been wiping down every machine I play with alcohol preps.  Also for decades I have been wiping down all handles toilet bowl seats remote controls  etc.  in hotel rooms.

Covid-19 is spreading all over and it will continue to spread until a vaccine is formulated.
Everyone will have to make his/her own determinations as to exposure to large groups.

Although there has now been a slight downturn in casino attendance in this country, once it is announced that some casino workers or patrons have been infected the you know what will really hit the fan !

Re  Karen A.  you may not be touching the playing cards however you do touch the chips !

Obviously, if one touches something that has the virus on it, and is wearing gloves, that prevents the virus from getting on your skin. However, if you would then touch your face with the gloves still on, you would still transmit the virus to your face in the same way you would if you are not wearing gloves. Most people would not wear gloves, and take them off every time they need to touch their face for something, and then put on a fresh pair. So most likely, gloves are not going to add much protection to most people. Touching your face is an action that most people are almost unaware of, and while that is recommended as an action to avoid, I'm not sure most people would be able to do it.

just wondering if gloves would be a wise choice. not that it is better than sanitizer, more expensive, but helps to reduce touching the face, and that dirty money

Harry,

Partly informed by a recent SE Asia trip, I think that everything you propose sounds reasonable.  And, if you're under 80 and in generally good health, even catching the virus shouldn't be the worst thing that's ever happened to you.

The question I'm weighing is whether it makes sense to go to a casino right now without a compelling reason.  I'd do it for sufficient $ rewards but not for recreation.  YMMV.

As you probably have read, only the N95 style masks provide real protection against others.  All the rest mostly serve to protect others if you have the virus.

I just saw your second post.  The 3.4% estimate is worldwide.  Thanks to our better health care system, the US rate probably will turn out to be well under 1%.  And most of the 1% will be elderly folks with some preexisiting medical condition.

I'm getting ready to book my first casino trip in 5 months (still prepping our house  for sale and for the move from GA to MA).

So, I'm curious how actively players are engaging in against COVID-19 (much less, seasonal colds this spring).  I generally break out the hand sanitizer around this time of year and liberally apply it to machine buttons before playing.  At minimum, I'm considering upping that game to latex gloves.

Obviously masks are in vogue lately.  Until US incidence spikes up a bit, I'm inclined to forego that precaution -- guess I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this would be "overkill" for now and focusing my attention on limiting surface contact.  But I guess I'll keep a mask at the ready in the event that someone is actively coughing (it seems impossible to avoid "smoker's hack" in the casino).

I look to completely avoid buffets.  (And with at least one LV confirmed case today, I would think casinos would find it most prudent to shut down buffets until this risk has mostly passed.)  That's not to say that full service restaurants are sterile environments ... but at least I look for some daily screening of workers who'll come in touch with my food.

I'm opening discussion with an intent that there be no alarmist posts; just looking for some thoughtful and reasoned commentary.
