We have lived here for 18 years in a non-gated community, and love it. One attempted break-in by a teen in one house in the neighborhood I am aware of in 18 years. I don't think it is any worse than any suburb anywhere in the USA.
We have several friends who also love Vegas. It all depends on you. Bad drivers and lots of accidents are more of a problem than crime. We don't own a car and use Uber, buses, or walk, so no major problem for us.
If you can find a place to retire to without any traffic or crime, I am guessing you will be out in the country, far away from a major city. Here in Vegas besides the disadvantages of living in a well populated area, we have the advantages of huge number of restaurants of various cuisines, live entertainment of all sorts, movie theaters, internet service, shopping of all types ranging from dollar stores to the most expensive, public transit, paratransit service, many hospitals, sport venues (Raiders stadium being built and others), casinos, nearby skiing and rock climbing and other natural areas, and access to a major airport to anywhere in the world.
