Just to muddy the waters further, I'll throw out another suggestion: in
frequent flyer forums the distinction is drawn between (a)
tier/elite/premier/medallion qualifying miles or points (which determine
your elite status); and (b) redeemable miles (which you can use for award
tickets).
So talking about tier-qualifying points vs. redeemable points might help.
