I'm at the Las Vegas Westgate several times a year competing in pool tournaments, including the World Championship coming up in August.
I spend some time between matches relaxing at video poker. FPDW is my favorite, but those are hard to find, especially $1. I do not want to spend time wandering around town, so I play what the Westgate has to offer. The best seems to be DW with the (bet five) payout:
5, 10, 15, 20, 20, 45, 75, 125, 1000, 4000
I have the holding hierarchy modified from that for FPDW. Done fairly well with it. Got two royals and my share of 4 deuces the last time I was there for a week.
There are a variety of "bonus" games that I haven't bothered to look into. A gentleman stopped by while I was playing, and remarked that the payout was better for some of those. That may be for all I know, but after thinking about it some, the concentration of payoffs in 4-of-a-kinds would seem to make those games more volatile. And the hold hierarchy tables are surely a lot more complicated.
Question: Is there any compelling reason for me to get acquainted with those "bonus" varieties?
