Re: [vpFREE] South Point Warning

The obvious competitor would be Boyd's casinos. They have about the same games, maybe Boyd's are slightly better, and Boyd's have better promotions and multipliers, and there are more Boyd's casinos to play at and they are in better locations. Dotty's would also be a major competitor in the $5-$250 per hand range and even more convenient to find.

I disagree. You're saying Boyd's, but I'm assuming you mean Coast --- which is the Gold Coast, Orleans, Sam's Town, Suncoast segment of Boyd casinos.

Gold Coast has the inventory closest to South Point, I suppose, but they top off their good games at $1 single line rather than $2 and limit most of their promotions to $10,000 coin-in per day. Orleans, Suncoast, and Sam's Town are considerably tighter overall. Note: my information is a year old. I found Gold Coast barely playable when I was getting a mailer --- and unplayable without. For some reason, the thickness of the cigarette-smoke-fog bothers me much more when I'm not getting a mailer.

Dotty's isn't even in the discussion for out-of-towners at all, as you MUST pick up free play every two weeks at least --- and only then if you can do it on a Saturday or Sunday. (They use a calendar week there, where cash back is awarded weekly from Sunday to Saturday. They have a "one day early to one-day late" philosophy, so if you go in Saturday or Sunday you can pick up money for two different "weeks." Going in any other day of the week only gets you one week's worth of cash back.) For locals who play for dollars or more, Dotty's has some advantages (I certainly play there and have for years), but these are mostly 15-machine shops that are specifically geared to be attractive to women who smoke. Unless you're a competent video poker player who plays at least $5 a hand and who has the discipline to only play the best games, the games at Dotty's are MUCH tighter than other locals' casinos in Vegas. They are comparable to what you get at 15-machine pubs around Vegas --- and those video poker games are typically in the 95%-96% range.

The biggest advantages at Dotty's are for those who generate a lot of W2Gs. If you're not a professional gambler, generating extra W2Gs has very real tax implications. There's a relatively small percentage of players who play for at least $5 a hand and who can deal with lots of W2Gs. Although Station Casinos has been trying to shut down Dotty's for a couple of years now --- I doubt if Michael Gaughan considers Dotty's competition at all. I certainly wouldn't if I were him.
