I just got back from Las Vegas ( full trip report to follow shortly) and the Grand loss rebate is no more.
I went in on Friday, 10/30/15 and asked about it. The booth person said " If you ask me, I can let you do it". She said they are phasing it out, not advertising it but will honor it if someone requests it. There were no signs in the casino and no literature available at the booth. I asked about the redemption and she told me the first 50% would be available 24 hours after my first carded play. The next 25% would not be available til December since the marketing department has to manually enter it and they are off for the weekend. At this point, I decided to treat it as a 50% loss rebate and commit $400 and see what happens.
I played the $1 Double Diamond machine ( 2 coin). My first $100 was gone after $130 coin in. I know slots are bad but a 77% loss even on a fairly short amount of play seemed excessive. The second $100 got me back to even and then I switched to $5, single coin ( no bonus for playing 2 coins vs 1 coin). I hit something, got up $225 and then cashed out.
My wife and I went to the Grand on Saturday and the booth person said the promotion was over. I told her that I had done it yesterday. She said that since we were husband and wife, and I played it yesterday, she would allow my wife to play it today. My wife lost $438. When we went to collect, the booth person said the loss was $438 which they will round up to $450 loss and put $225 in freeplay on her card. Also, her December installment will be $113 ( $112.50 rounded up) and the same in February. So, the Grand was generous on the rounding.
On Saturday evening, Freemont Street was full of Halloween revelers but the Grand was painfully quiet. That casino has the funeral home feel to it and I don't see how the casino portion can survive. There is no hook to get you to come in. The loss rebate was a nice try but it confusing on the rules and I'm not sure loss rebates really attract and retain new customers. If I had stock in that hotel, I would definitely short it.
Maybe The D will buy it.
