I've had that happen before. I assume normal procedure is for the machine to give you your ticket back, but sometimes it doesn't. Normally they find the ticket scrunched up in some corner of the machine, but sometimes it just disappears. I assume there is some niche corner in the machine that techs don't know about, probably full of scrunched up tickets, just like the bottom of the old machines would be full of spilled coins. On a side note, sometimes the cashout machines that give you cash for your ticket also eat the ticket without paying or short pay you and you have to protest to security. One time a machine actually spit out another smaller ticket like the debit receipts that said "take this to the cage" where I was paid. I've also noticed over the years that cage workers have gotten sloppier, sometimes short paying you, I assume just by mistake.
