There are some exceptions, being Canadian is one of them as Canada has no tax on gambling. As a generality, if you don't divulge ID, the casino will withhold taxes, which you can apply for later from the IRS.

I don't think you mentioned it in your article, but another reason to protect your identity is to protect yourself from casino malfeasance. And of course in these days of rampant identity theft, it's a good idea to take steps to protect yourself from identity theft in any case. When someone other than Social Security or the IRS asks for your Social Security number, you should think twice about just divulging such information.
