Few thing of keno as a game where one can get an edge. You can get an edge, not from the game itself but from the promotions that go with the game.
The best example is tournament play in a buy in style tournament where there is no entry fee and you keep all you win. The way you get the edge is because prize money and comps are also given out as well.
There is a tournament at The El Cortez (LVS) and The Orleans (LVS), the El Cortez being June 12-14, The Orleans being June 17-19. Both have $500 buy ins and contribute about $10,000 to the prize fund paid to the top 10 or 15 winners (depends on the casino). Thus the analysis is very easy to determine the edge.
Both casinos offer tickets that return any where from 70%-88% for tickets allowed in tournament play. Let's use 80% for purposes of the example and assume there are 100 entries in each. The El Cortez will probably have less and The Orleans more but 100 is a good average to use.
Thus on the average for your $500 buy in with an 80% return expect to receive (expected value) $400 back. But add the prize money of $10,000 divided among 100 entries and this averages out to an extra $100 per entrant. Thus you immediately have an expectation of breaking even. But there are freebies thrown at you as well.
Both casinos give 3 nights free stay to the invited tournament entrants (If not on the list call the casino and ask to be invited, and I have yet to see anyone refused using this method as players are always welcomed) and other comps.
The El Cortez gives you $25 in free slot play and many of their 99%+ games are eligible for this free slot play.
The Orleans gives several free buffets. The El Cortez gives locals not staying in the hotel that enter the tournament $50 in food vouchers. Both have a tournament banquet with excellent food.
And if the casino sees you as a keno player you are less likely to be scrutinized as a heavy VP advantage player, and besides tourneys are a lot of fun. Unfamiliar with keno play, go to the GBC (Gambler's Book Club) now merged with Gambler's General Store (800 S Main, any bus to BTC or actually walkable from downtown in decent weather) and check out books by Wayne McClure, David Cowles, and Stanford Wong's book on tourney play. Or check out my column in Gaming Today http://gamingtoday.com/casino_games/keno_bingo/articles,
Both give a small gift to the entrant. Annette runs an excellent operation at The Orleans and Vinnie runs an excellent operation at The El Cortez.
At the end of the tourney your play will be downloaded to your account so that you get future invites and more.
Both casinos have 99%+ video poker and good slot clubs. Both have non smoking sections in ttheir keno lounges. Both have excellent restaurants. Both are easily accessible by the excellent CAT bus system (Orleans, 104/201), El Cortez (BHX, 207/208/Deuce). Both have multiple odds on craps (less than1% house edge before comps with proper play) and decent blackjack games (house edge of 1/2% available). Best of luck, Pesach
