[vpFREE] Re: 5 play oddities

You are obviously welcome to switch your play in any way you wish, but if you are basing your decision on the "fact" that something is "odd about the random number generator in 5 play", you may wish to re-think your decision.  Although I don't know much about Video Poker machine / software design, I would be very surprised if the software / firmware has more than one random number generator, and I can think of no way other than a fundamental flaw in programming (or an intentional provision for non-random behavior) that would make that random number generator operate in an "odd" way based on how many lines are being played at once.

There has been extensive discussion on this list of "odd" experiences with a wide variety of hands in a wide variety of circumstances.  The fact of the matter is simply, that with all the players who report their experiences here, and all of games they play and all the circumstances under which they play, there will be an opportunity for one or more of them to experience an "outlier" -- something at the far end (sometimes of the very far end) of the bell-shaped curve, not likely to happen routinely, but very likely to happen to one or two people out of this sizeable sample of people and play - and this can and does occur despite of what is "expected".

On the "good" end of the bell-shaped curve is the example of the reports by some individuals (more than one, by far) of getting two royals on two successive hands.

Even a "gaffed" machine (one with a REAL "error", intentional or unintentional, that would cause events to occur with something other than the expected frequency) can never be identified with complete certainty based on a sample, even a large sample, of historical data.  All that could be said is that, at some point in time, there is a 90%, 99%, or some other percentage chance that the variations observed and recorded occurred based on something other than chance.

What percentage of certainty is "enough" for someone to say "OK, I'm not playing this machine anymore" is an individual decision (and one you've made with regard to 5-play, apparently), but remember than anyone can have the same frequency of "odd" results on a "good" machine as well.

2a. 5 play oddities
Date: Fri Jan 24, 2014 7:23 pm ((PST))

I've been primarily a 5 play player, but I'm switching to 3 play.  There is just something odd about the random number generator in 5 play.  Tonight for example I was dealt 3 Aces three times on 5 pay, and never had a 4th.  Over and over this keeps happening on 5 play...I can't tell you the last time 3 Aces on 5 lines produced a quad.  Oh, I've gotten aces there holding a pair, but with trips, no.  On 3 play or single line, occasionally trip aces produces the quad, but on 5 play, over and over and over again, no.  Then there is 4 to the royal, with again, an unusual lack of royals as the final result.  When 3/5 play first came out, I'd get that royal result on occasion, but in the  few years nothing, and I play a LOT of VP.  There are other oddities too, but those are the ones that stick out (yes I realize 3 Aces on 5 lines will only get you a quad 5/47 times, but when you've been dealt the trip aces 20-30-40 or more times and nada....come on....)

I know some of you will call me crazy, but will anyone who plays a lot of 5 play call me nuts (or back me up)?  (and I'm only talking about 5 play here, not 3 or 10 or single line).
