I recently went to Las Vegas 10/30/13 - 11/3/13 and rented a vehicle ( as usual) for the trip. The first rental was about $140 for a compact car for 4 days. After a lot of shopping, I got it down to $77 for 4 days for a midsize ( would be picking up other people). Then, a couple days before the trip, I got an email from autorentals.com showing a $57 rate for 4 days with all taxes from Fox. I figured I would give Fox a shot.
I knew it was an extra shuttle ride but for $20, I thought I would give it a shot. Here is my experience:
Bus ride from Rent a center to Fox was only 3 miles but sure seemed to take a long time. The Fox office is down near Silverton. I stood in line for about 25 minutes. I think every person ahead of me had never rented a vehicle before. This will happen when you rent cars for $8 a day.
I finally get to the counter and the lady does the usual small talk ( where are you staying, how many people, etc). I then declined the bigger vehicle and the insurance. She told me that most customers at least take the base coverage and I repeated "Decline all". She got very frosty after that. I just don't understand why rental car companies think it should cost $15/day to give basic insurance on a vehicle worth $15,000 ( after all of the miles and wear and tear). I know it is grossly profitable for them.
So, I go pick up the car. They were out of mid size so I got the next size up (an Altima). I would have been pretty upset if I paid extra for an upgrade that they were going to give ma anyway. This vehicle had 48,000 miles on it and the cruise control did not work ( I found that out later).
Went through the inspection with the lady at the exit. We both did the walk around and noted the many dents and dings. She told me not to worry about the small items but I asked her to mark them anyway.
Vehicle return was much smoother. Even though a pretty big dent on the front passenger door wasn't listed on the damage report, there was no issue returning it. There is a gas station 2 blocks from Fox so that was convenient.
In talking to the shuttle driver, he said that Fox gets charged $18 every time their shuttle bus pulls into the rental car facility. On pick, I was one of 2 passengers. Going back , I was the only passenger. So, shuttling me around cost Fox quite a bit , maybe $10-$15 ( divide number of passengers by the fee and estimate addtional passengers after I left). Since the base rate was $9/day they sure weren't making money on my rental. Especially since I put 300 miles on the vehicle.
Over all, you get what you pay for. Maybe a little bit more in this case. There is the exta shuttle ride, extra tip, extra time and gas . For $20, it wasn't worth it. If the difference were $50, I would do it again. I always like to try new things so renting from Fox is off my LV bucket list.
I won't rule them out for the future but will have to factor in the added time and money to rent from them.
