In a sense, they are entertainers.
The "customers" sometimes tip them afterwards from their wins, or give them some cash if losing.
Usually they choose people who don't know video poker (e.g. people who don't know what cards to hold...so the scammer is actually giving good playing advice for which cards to hold) and play 88-95% slot machines. So very often spending time at 97-99% video poker had more wins than
their usual game.
