Dave's reference to the archives as "memory lane" brought a broad smile to my face.
The vpFREE archive is a treasure trove of history. But when I'm feeling particularly nostalgic, I take a dive into the former Skip Hughes Group list archive (vpmail). While the oldest portion of that database has rolled off, it still starts in around the time of my vp novitiate (1999-2001).
There was a particular elite cadre who hung out back then, and their take on the changing play landscape (not to mention the general intelligence shared on the group) was down right electrifying at times.
It's amusing to look back on discussions around the time that Coast properties started pulling FPDW from the floor -- with discussion debating whether such "draconian" cuts could stand the passage of time.
------------
It's a far tougher playing field these days. It's with the benefit of hindsight that I can now be a appreciative of what was a very trying dry streak in my own play during 2002-2006.
In that period, when it seemed that most every active player around me was reaping the benefits of a rich terrain, I felt battered and bruised in what seemed a parody on my part to act out the classic definition of "insanity" (doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results).
Yet, out of that experience, I honed my play practices to a fine edge -- something that well positioned me for the play environment these days. It might well be the case that I'd otherwise fate would see me a duller player these day ... one far less up to the challenges at hand.
Whatever the case, my appreciation for intelligence and insight gleaned from others here on vpFREE (and on other groups, such as vpmail and acvpp) is near boundless.
(I look to return that favor, in at least small measure, through my own occasonal posts.)
