I find looking for pairs to be a positive technique. Human generated lists tend to have pairs (and longer strings) underrepresented while machine generated lists tend to have pairs overrepresented. Video poker can be looked at like a form of roulette, you have 10 slots, the first five dealt cards and five potential draw cards. You would look for pairs by looking for a match between the previous card in a slot and the next hand's card in that slot, the average cycle should be 52 with an sd of 7.2 . Any anomalies would of course likely effect optimum draw strategy and bet sizing.
