FWIW - Everything I've grasped to date would have suggested that given a fixed trial and a known probability of the event in question, binomial will yield a precise probability of "n" occurrences of the event (as well as probabilities for questions such as "at least" and "no more than"), whereas poisson yields only an approximation.
But I'm always looking for an education ... I'll review the topic further and report back.
