Not positive but I don't think the W is on their list anymore. Actually neither is Loews unless there is a special arrangement. At least they didn't offer it last time I checked.

We liked Lowes which is next door to Harrahs and easy walk over to New Orleans Harrahs and the underground walkway, or cross street. Very good restaurant in it as well. The W is also very close, quick walk across the street to Harrahs. You should be safe on any of these or close partner hotels. I've done it late at night too, but obviously look before you walk and know where you are walking.
Also watch out for fast moving cars on the streets, they seem to move pretty fast for a center city.
