How strictly they enforce this rule probably varies by casino and by personnel involved. You seem to have experienced the extreme end of the rule enforcement. A while back, at another HET property, a security guard appeared from nowhere and asked me why I was playing on someone else's card. I pulled out the card and told him something like "I guess I put my wife's card in by mistake". I didn't get 86'd or anything like that, but he told me I had to quit playing on her card right then, which I did. This happened after literally years of playing on my wife's card (and vice versa) with no problems at all. I have also heard of people recently getting barred from HET casinos by getting caught running their spouses free play.
