I learned about video poker in 1996. Bought Len Fromm's book and Gary Catlins
VPtutor program.(Truly works of art for the day.) Ran VPtutor on a 286. To keep
multiple games I had to create multiple copies of the program, change the pay
table, and wait 5 or 6 hours for it to re-analyze the game. Practised at home
for a few months.
First played for real at the old Flamingo Hilton in Reno. Started playing 1 coin
on a nickel 58 bonus progressive. Hit the royal on my first night for the
princely sum of $12,50.
OK I said to myself - royals do happen in the real world. Went back to the same
machine the next day, bet 5 nickels and hit the progressive for $236.
Two royals on the same machine in 20 hours.
The following June I was in vegas for a convention. By now I've graduated to
quarter machines.
Hit a royal at MGM Grand on June 22 for $1,000. Not bad since I came to town
with $500 to cover all expenses.
June 23 was my last day in town. 3 hours to flight departure. What the hey I
thought, let's take a flyer on dollars. Never played them before. Found a bank
of 16 slant-tops with 58 bonus. 4 or 5 players down at the far end. I took the
end machine furthest from them.
I had decided to put $100 in the machine, play it through once, and see what
happens.
- lost the first 11 hands - not even a push - 0% return on $55.
- 12 hand I got a push - the ROI is improving.
- the 13th hand I drew 2 for a $4,000 hand pay. HOORAY
The relevant point to this discussion is that the attendant told me he'd just
paid a royal on that machine no more than 10 minutes prior. The player took the
winnings and left. That explained why everbody was down at the far end of the
bank.
I learned real early in my VP career that "machines have no memory". Indeed this
sucker paid 2 royals in 15 hands (assumes the attendant had him play off the
previous winner).

A number of years ago I got 3 royals on same machine at the Palms, single line,
over a period of about 8 hrs of play.
I'm still waiting for a royal on a redraw or back to back royals.
