I don't recall that specific discussion, but such courtesies are
largely a thing of the past -- the bean counters rein supreme these
days. Still, I suppose at a couple of the smaller locals such a thing
is still possible.
I still remember fondly the days at Barbary Coast where a modest tip
on a RF (or even a hand pay on quarter deuces) along with a gracious
request would land you a "meal card". If the attendant was in a
generous mood (notably, ones on the grave shift) they'd give you one
good for dinner, rather than just breakfast.
Our best meal there was courtesy of a dinner meal card. We had their
t-bone special -- a steak that rivaled the best we'd ever had in a
coffee shop. (A repeat at a later date, on our own comps,
unfortunately proved mediocre.)
