One of the first stories I heard about progressives was about a $1
play in 1984 or earlier, before there were credit machines, at the bar
at Harrah's Tahoe when they had 2% meters. Out of 30 machines, 1 team
had something like 18, another team had around 11, and the lone non
pro had the other machine, which frequently broke down, and he hit it
for just over $30,000. The man who told me the story, who ran one of
the teams, said he played the last 48 hours straight and had to be
carried out.
